The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland , Australia. 大堡礁，是世界最大最長的珊瑚礁群，位於南太平洋的澳洲東北海岸，它縱貫於澳洲東北昆士蘭州外的珊瑚海，北從托雷斯海峽，南到南回歸線以南（約南緯10°至南緯24°），綿延伸展共有2600公里左右，最寬處161公里。約有2900個獨立礁石以及900個大小島嶼。
