Building at the complex began during the reign of Senusret I in the Middle Kingdom and continued into the Ptolemaic period, although most of the extant buildings date from the New Kingdom. 卡奈克神廟是底比斯最為古老的廟宇，在尼羅河東岸的盧克索鎮北4千米處，該神廟經很長時間建造起來，由磚牆隔成三部分。中間的部分保存最完好，也是面積最大的一部分，占地約有30公頃，也是獻給太陽神阿蒙的(Amon Temple in Karnak)；左側的是獻給Montu神的，占地2.5公頃；另一個是獻給阿蒙神的妻子(形為禿鷲的Mut女神)，現在尚未發掘。
